HMC Project Call – Nine Projects funded

31.03.2021

Nine projects are funded in the first round of the Helmholtz Incubator Platform Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) with a total of 3.45 million Euro – half of which is provided by the Helmholtz Initiative and Networking Fund. 12 Helmholtz Centres are involved representing all six research areas of the Helmholtz Association. 26 applications were submitted, out of which nine projects were proposed for funding in a competitive process by an international panel of experts.

“We are very pleased with the response to the first HMC project call and look forward to working with the nine funded projects! The fact that all six research areas of the Helmholtz Association are covered by the nine projects shows the high relevance of metadata for research in the Helmholtz Association” says HMC spokesperson Sören Lorenz.

Over the next two years, the projects will address various topics in the context of metadata, including the development of interoperable metadata standards for image files, the harmonisation of metadata standards between the research areas of health, environment and earth observation, and the development of a workflow platform for Archiving of all processes of a scientific project.

All projects and their development are presented on the HMC website.

With an annual call for community projects, the targeted development of tools and solutions for metadata handling is fostered within HMC. The projects serve as important use cases for the community, are integrated into the HMC activities and are therefore available to the entire Helmholtz Association. Projects can be funded for a maximum of 2 years and are financed by the Helmholtz Association’s Innovation and Networking Fund (50%) and by the participating centres (50%).

The Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration is one of five platforms of the Helmholtz Incubator for Information and Data Science. The aim of HMC is to enable research data to be enriched with metadata in the various phases of its creation and to develop and implement concepts and services for this purpose (www.helmholtz-metadaten.de).
