Analyzing Information from Re3data

One of HMC's tasks is to formulate recommendations for handling metadata. To develop such recommendations, it is important to know how existing data infrastructures are structured and what properties are implemented. An important source of information for this is re3data, the repository of repositories. It can be found at https://www.re3data.org. There you can find information on the interfaces, vocabularies, PID systems used, and much more.

To make this information usable for us, we have created a dashboard that allows us to display the data in re3data filtered by Helmholtz repositories and Helmholtz research areas. For this, we use the DFG classification system, for which the affiliation of repositories in re3data is documented.

Since Helmholtz repositories contain a variety of different information and the research areas are very broad, these filters are not simple and precise to project onto the DFG classification system. Please note that the filters were created by us subjectively to the best of our knowledge. We have applied two different filtering methods:

  • By keywords: We searched the metadata of the repositories for discipline-specific keywords and created a classification based on the DFG classification system. This system can be selected as "Keywords" for each research area.

  • We determined which areas of the classification system are covered for the Helmholtz repositories and created a classification based on that. This system can be selected as DFG-HGF.

Additionally, you can freely select or deselect areas of the classification system to generate corresponding statistics.

We use the tool to estimate how widespread certain techniques and processes are already in the repositories. Since we suspect that this information might also be of interest to others, we are making it available here. Currently, the dashboard represents the re3data status as of May 2024.

For further questions, suggestions, and criticism regarding the dashboard, feel free to contact us at hmc-hub-ee@geomar.de.

Please note that this dashboard is a proprietary development by HMC, created independently of re3data based on the information from re3data. HMC has no influence on which information is represented in re3data, nor has re3data influenced the filters or presentation.
