Fundamentals of Scientific Metadata
Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) is all about boosting the quality of research data with the power of metadata – and we're bringing this approach to life across the entire Helmholtz Association. In this context, HMC is excited to offer the course Fundamentals of Scientific Metadata – Why context matters as part of the HIDS Data Science course portfolio.
This course is an entry-level introduction to the fundamentals of scientific metadata for PhD students, early-career researchers and Postdocs and the material is also available via then The Carpentries Incubator. In this course we will look at the intricate relationship between (digital) research data, metadata and knowledge, discuss why metadata is critical in today's research, as well as explain some of the technologies and concepts related to structured machine-readable metadata.
So whether you're trying to understand data shared by a collaborator or revisiting your own work months after publication, this course will teach you how to enhance your data by properly annotating it with metadata – because context matters
This course was originally designed for scientific staff and researchers in the Helmholtz research field Information by HMC Hub Information but its broad range of topics and easy-to-understand examples make it suitable to members of all scientific fields so that it is open to anyone interested in mastering research data annotation through metadata.

This year, for the first time, our courses are integrated into a joint course portfolio of the Helmholtz Information and Data Science Platforms (HIDS) Helmholtz AI, HMC, Helmholtz Imaging, HIDA and HiFIS. This portfolio contains learning paths on data science skills and competences that pick up learners at different levels of their knowledge and enable them to expand their data science skills. All HIDS courses are free of charge for Helmholtz employees.
