HMC @ EUDAT Conference 2024
The EUDAT Collaborative Data Infrastructure (EUDAT CDI) is one of the largest infrastructures of integrated data services and resources supporting research in Europe. It is supported by more than 20 European organisations, data and computing centres. EUDAT members operate a number of open services for the European research data community, e.g. b2access, a central authentication service, b2find, a data discovery service, b2share, a service for publishing and sharing research data, and b2inst, a service for registering instrument PIDs. HMC is not directly involved in EUDAT, but actively supports e.g. the b2inst service, which is integrated into our instrument databases for registering PIDs PIDInst.
This year's annual EUDAT conference was held in Karlsruhe, Germany from 3 to 5 December under the motto of “Paving the Way for Open Science in Europe”. The programme included not only EUDAT topics but also presentations from the FAIRCORE4EOSC project and other EOSC related initiatives.
HMC representatives contributed to several aspects of the conference. Nils Brinkmann from GFZ presented "The Sensor Management System (SMS) as a reference implementation for sensor metadata management in Earth System Science using the EUDAT B2INST identifier". HMC also presented three research showcases as posters. They covered 1. the implementation of semantic artefacts in Helmholtz data infrastructures, 2. improving consistency in the use of PIDs, and 3. stakeholder responsibilities for the maintenance and implementation of PID metadata in data repositories.
The numerous workshops generated many interesting and exciting discussions on the state and future of research data management in the European context. A major topic of discussion was the future and sustainability of the services developed by EOSC as a whole and the new business model of the EUDAT services. Most of the presentations and a wrap-up are available on the conference website.
We really enjoyed the many contributions, the lively discussions and the deep insight into the European service platforms and look forward to the next EUDAT conference in autumn 2025.
