Title: Metadata and data management using BEXIS2 system: a case study in the Jena Experiment database
Date: Friday, 11 November 2022, 13:00 CET
Ecology has entered a world of big data, and urgently calls for a clear metadata standard to find, interpret and share data. This is essential for compiling data from all over the world at different time points to enable data reuse and allow synthesis work. However, it has always been a big challenge to provide a standardized view to improve interoperability.
This talk introduces metadata and data management system in the Jena Experiment, a 20-years grassland biodiversity experiment platform in Germany. We used a FAIR-aligned data management system (BEXIS2) to manage dataset. BEXIS2 allows us to easily archive and share data with certain standards. We developed a metadata schema, including the definitions of common terms. The database includes lists of standard variable names and units as templates to use. This metadata schema and vocabulary templates are under maintenance and growth together with the progress of the ecological research. It helps greatly to promote integrating information, corporation and publishing. It comes also with many challenges.
To stimulate and support interdisciplinary exchange, the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) in close cooperation with the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA) is organizing the HMC FAIR Friday lecture series. It is aimed at experienced actors in research data management as well as scientists from all research fields of the Helmholtz Association and beyond.
HMC FAIR Friday features talks by high-ranking national and international speakers to bring all participants (even) closer to the world of FAIR data, deepen individual aspects and stimulate discussions.
