HMC FAIR Friday

Speaker: Stephan Druskat, German Aerospace Center (DLR)

Title: HERMES: FAIRer software publication through richer metadata

Date: Friday, 11. November 2024, 10 am

Research software powers research across disciplines, and enables us to work with ever larger and more complex research data. Without long-term access to the specific versions of the software that have been used in research, we are unable to reproduce the research that has been done. The deposit of software metadata and artifacts in publication repositories is therefore an important step towards better research reproducibility. What is more, it makes the software citable with the necessary specificity.

Going beyond general availability, reproducibility and citation, publishing software with maximally rich metadata enables software publications to be really FAIR. HERMES - funded by the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration - is an open source project that enables the publication process for research software metadata and artifacts to be automated. Through harnessing continuous integration systems, HERMES makes it easier for dynamic research software projects to publish their outputs directly from their source code repositories to their publication repositories of choice, making FAIR software publication possible for everyone.

In this presentation, Stephan Druskat will give an overview of HERMES' concept and implementation of automating software publication, the project outcomes, and give an overview of recent and future work based on HERMES.

About the speaker: Stephan Druskat is a computer science researcher at the German Aerospace Center (DLR)'s Institute for Software Technology. His research interests are research software sustainability, citation and publication, and empirical and evidence-based software engineering. Before joining DLR, he has worked as an RSE in linguistics for a decade. He holds an M.A. in English Language and Literature, Modern German Literature, and Linguistics from the Free University Berlin. Stephan is a Fellow of the Software Sustainability Institute, co-founder of the German RSE association de-RSE, creator and project lead of the Citation File Format (CFF) project, and chair of the task force "Software Authorship & Contribution" of the Research Software Alliance. He served the HERMES project as a principal investigator.

To stimulate and support interdisciplinary exchange, the Helmholtz Metadata Collaboration (HMC) in close cooperation with the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Academy (HIDA) is organizing the HMC FAIR Friday lecture series. It is aimed at experienced actors in research data management as well as scientists from all research fields of the Helmholtz Association and beyond.

HMC FAIR Friday features talks by high-ranking national and international speakers to bring all participants (even) closer to the world of FAIR data, deepen individual aspects and stimulate discussions.
