Metadata Management in Practice
Effective metadata management is essential for ensuring that research data can be organized, interpreted, and reused in the long term. Structured metadata supports transparency, interoperability, and the sustainable use of scientific data across research environments.
This course introduces the key principles of metadata management and connects them directly to practical implementation workflows using JSON Schema and metadata tools. Participants will gain hands-on experience with creating, editing, and exploring structured metadata in a repository-based environment.
By the end of the course, participants will be able to:
explain the importance and added value of metadata
navigate and interpret JSON Schema structures
create, edit, and manage metadata using a metadata management tool
search and retrieve data using structured metadata
Target Group
This course is open to researchers within the Helmholtz Association. It is particularly relevant for scientists working with complex measurement data, especially in the Research Field Matter.
Prerequisites
Participants must install the Metadata Editor in advance and create an account for the Datamanager User Interface (GitHub, ORCID, or Helmholtz AAI login required).

Joint HIDS Course Portfolio
Selected HMC trainings are part of the joint HIDS Course Portfolio within the Helmholtz Information & Data Science Framework (HIDS). The portfolio is jointly organized by its five platforms Helmholtz AI, HMC, Helmholtz Imaging, HIDA, and HiFIS. It provides structured learning pathways across all experience levels and is free of charge for Helmholtz employees. All courses are held in English.
Further information and the full course overview are available in the HIDS Data Course Portfolio and all HMC courses via the HMC training overview page.
